EMDR and Brainspotting

EMDR & Brainspotting

You’ve already tried to resolve the issues through careful reasoning and thinking it through, or even traditional talk therapy but it isn’t going away. Stress, trauma, grief and intense emotions short circuit our systems, which changes our thought processes, physiology, awareness, and perceptions. The pathway to healing is integrating these systems so we are connecting emotional experiences to body awareness and thoughts.

EMDR and Brainspotting are therapy approaches that access memories, emotions, and information held in deeper parts of the brain and body. Our nervous system, brain circuitry, and body are interconnected. EMDR and Brainspotting are advanced techniques that provide emotional and physical benefits with transformative results that are faster than traditional talk therapy alone. Both techniques work well in telehealth and in person.

I have to admit that when I first learned about both techniques that I was skeptical but after hearing about the results from colleagues and later begun training, I became fascinated with mastering the techniques and my clients love the results.

EMDR is an acronym for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing because it is based on the rapid eye movements (REM) all us have when we are dreaming, which is a way our brains release emotional distress. This technique utilizes how our bodies are designed and operate by mimicking these eye movements, releasing emotional pain, sadness, anxiety, old junk that you simply want to drop. (If it sounds weird – yup, I agree. This is why I was skeptical.)

Brainspotting, considered by many to be a more gentle approach, was discovered by Dr. David Grand, a top EMDR trainer. Clients typically wear headphones with biolateral sound (light music that shifts between the left and right ears) while processing the presenting issues and may experience shifts in emotions, sensations, thoughts and memories.

In addition to helping change and transform trauma, anxiety, stress and emotional pain, we can also work on accentuating your strengths and anchor you in confidence and stability.
