Getting through each day feels harder and you’ve lost motivation and the pastimes that used to relax you no longer interest you. Alcohol or drugs may be involved to try to soothe yourself and taking care of yourself is getting more difficult as restful sleep feels impossible. Your relationships and work or education is being affected and sometimes you feel desperate.

It’s not uncommon for people to shape their life decisions around their fears, while making major sacrifices in the process. Protecting ourselves from anxiety works against us, as we build a safe prison that feels safe but isolates us even as the anxious thoughts and feeling grow stronger.
